Rashid Pelpuo: Ex-Sports Minister Hope For Premier League Football In Upper West

Dr. Rashid Hassan Pelpuo

Former Youth and Sports Minister under the late John Atta Mills government, Rashid Pelpuo is yearning for yet another Premier League football in Upper West Region.

After 12-years of Premier League football with Wa All Stars (now moved to AccraasLegon Cities), the Member of Parliament for Wa Central Constituency and the Wa folks would like to see yet another elite football action.

In an interview with Akoma FM, the lawmaker says Premier League football unites people in the region.

“Yes, of course, I would like to see another Premier League club like Wa All Stars rise in the region again and whatever I can do to support, I will do it.

“Because football enlivens the people; It unites the people [and] it makes people forget their challenges.

“It makes people feel that they are included and inclusiveness is one thing that is critical in the minds of people. So when you have such a team playing in the Premier League every week, people look up to something to smile about.”

“So there is nothing wrong if I have the capacity to help have such a team,” Hon. Pelpuo stated.

The last time the regional capital, Wa saw Premier League football was the era of the defunct Wa All Stars now rechristened Legon Cities FC.

Wa All Stars was formed in 2006 by former GFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi but upon corruption charges against him in 2018 following the Anas exposé, he sold the club in 2019.

Wa All Stars, now Legon Cities won the Ghana Premier League in 2016 but failed to glitter in Africa after their elimination from the Caf Champions League at the preliminary stage.
