Two thousand-one hundred and seventeen teachers in the Upper West region have received training in Information Communication Technology (ICT).
Mr Duncan Nsoh, the Upper West Regional Director of Education said the training was taken to increase the capacity of teachers in Communication Technology.
As part of the training, the regional education directorate also supplied 1, 470 laptops to the eleven municipal and district assemblies in the region.
Mr Duncan said the office block of the regional education has also been renovated; giving it a face lift and teacher’s absenteeism in school has been reduced as a result of intensive supervision.
The regional education director also mentioned that, a staff rationalization exercise was done and teachers who were found to be redundant in the municipality were sent to some districts where their services were needed, and Girl camps were also organized during the year to promote girl child education.
Mr. Duncan Nsoh, made this Known at the maiden Joint education forum organized by The Regional Directorate of Education and the Regional Coordinating Council under the theme: Education, Everybody’s Business.
Speaking on their challenges Mr. Duncan said that, some district education directorates especially Nadowli Kaleo, Nandom and Daffiama Bussie Issa are still lacking office accommodation and inadequate number of professional teachers, this he said has forced the education directorate to still engage non –professional teachers.
He reiterated that, teenage pregnancy is still on the rise in schools in the region. According to him early marriage of female children is another factor affecting girl’s education in the region.
The regional director of education is also concerned about the poor performance of pupils noting that female pupils are the worst culprits.
