New Upper West Hospital Has Been Commissioned

The Member of Parliament for Daffiama Bussie Issa in the Upper West Region, Dr. Sebastian Sandaare is questioning why the Upper West Regional Hospital remains locked after its commissioning by the President.

The President on August 18, commissioned the 160-bed capacity hospital for the public to begin accessing healthcare services.

Construction of the US$52 million hospital, which started in 2014, was financed by Euroget-De Invest, an Egyptian company.

Speaking to Citi News, the MP who is also a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, called for an immediate operationalisation of the facility.

“It is sad news to know that the hospital was commissioned on the 18th of this month and you can still go there. It is locked. Nothing is happening there. So what was the purpose of the President coming to commission it?”

“You commission the hospital and after that, you close it and the people are still being referred outside the region. That is the reason why we the NDC and myself, being a member of the health committee in Parliament, think that it is not right for the place to be commissioned and is locked.”

The Wa Regional Hospital is designed with several departments including a Physiotherapy unit; Pharmacy; Radiology Unit; Laboratory; Surgical Suite; Emergency & Casualty Unit; Burns Unit among others, as well as 20 Staff Housing Units.
