Acting Director General of GES Jacob Kor on Friday, August 28 said: “The previous release on school fees to be paid by students was a general template to serve as a guide to authorities, boarders and other affected students.” The statement explained that government’s policy captured in the president’s state-of-the- nation address last year was to help vulnerable groups by removing financial barriers and address inequalities in opportunities to transition from junior high school (JHS) to SHS. “It is envisaged that Heads of Schools would go strictly in accordance with what has been published.With the exception of students on Scholarship Day students were to pay Ghc 405.5 whiles Boarding is Ghc 724.5,” The statement gave a regional breakdown of the number of students to benefit from the free SHS policy:
Greater Accra – 52,664 in 46 schools
Ashanti – 64,430 in 102 schools
Western – 38,751 in 56 schools
Central – 27,795 in 54 schools
Volta – 36,859 in 88 schools
Eastern – 34,157 in 82 schools
Brong Ahafo – 38,751 in 56 schools
Northern – 17,648 in 45 schools
Upper East – 1,395 in 28 schools
Upper West – 877 in 23 schools.
