Upper West has been ranked as the most accountable and transparent region for the delivery of social services to its people, according to Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) latest District League Table (DLT) ranking.
The 2017 DLT ranking released on Tuesday in Wa showed that with a target score of 100 per cent, the Region scored 68.9 per cent for the regional average scores nationwide, placing Ghana’s youngest region first out of the country’s ten administrative regions.
All the eleven districts in the Region recorded scores above 60 per cent while three districts recorded 70 per cent and above, putting the assemblies among the top 20 districts countrywide.
Speaking to Journalists after engaging stakeholders on the results, the Northern Ghana Programmes Manager of CDD, Mr Paul Osei-Kuffour, said the purpose of the meeting was part of the dissemination process of the 2017 DLT results to Metropolitan, Municipal and District assemblies.
The regions were ranked in terms of their wellbeing in six key sectors: health, education, sanitation, water, security and governance.
Mr Kuffour described development of the DLT as a complex tool that involved initiation of several steps and getting stakeholders to agree with key indicators to be used in the construction of the index.
During the engagement, it was revealed that numerous challenges were encountered regarding data availability, despite the public nature of data sources and annual district indicators which are not routinely made available, making data access a substantial obstacles.
The DLT seeks to increase social accountability for development across the country so as to improve state responsiveness in local development and service delivery to beneficiaries.
Produced annually since 2014 by UNICEF and the CDD-Ghana in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and the Office of the Head of Local Government Service, the DLT assesses the level of development across the entire country by ranking all 216 Districts in Ghana by their level of wellbeing.
The DLT is the only tool in Ghana that allowed stakeholders to track the progress of development across the country to determine which districts were making progress and those struggling and needed greater support.
The Table aimed at improving transparency and accountability in national development by making progress public.
