All MMDCEs in Upper West Region

The Minister for Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development (MLGRD), Mr Dan Botwe has said the Local Government Service was designing mechanisms to penalize Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) who perform below expectation.

He stated that the new mechanisms would complement the existing law on local governance to ensure that residents do not suffer from inadequate service delivery because of negligence of officers in discharging their duties.

Mr Botwe disclosed this on Tuesday when he visited the Korle Klottey Municipal, Accra Metropolitan and Okaikoi North Municipal Assemblies as beneficiaries of the GARID project to assess the progress of ongoing desilting works of local drains.

He added that the new mechanisms would provide reward system to boost morale of officers of the Assemblies that perform to the best of their abilities.

“You must note that the ministry does not control how the municipality uses or spend their fundings but we only come to inspect what their works and also to ascertain if they use the right processes in procurement, auditing, and accounting, hence the need for our new mechanisms in rating them,” he stated.

He expressed satisfaction with drainage works done in the Assemblies he visited and urged other Assemblies to emulate same.

The Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) is a World Bank funded project to improve flood risk and solid waste management in the Odaw River basin.
