For immediate Release
GOVERNMENT DISTRIBUTES NEARLY EXPIRED FOOD ITEMS TO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS
The Upper West Regional Communications Bureau has learnt with utter dismay that the government had once again distributed some bags of almost expired rice to Senior High Schools to feod the children.
Our checks in some SHSs in the Region have revealed that government has distributed rice which expiry date was indicated as best before December 2023 – this means that this rice has barely two weeks of useful shelf life 12/11/2023.
We are deeply concerned about the possible health implications of our children consumíng food that is almost at the verge of expiry.
The food items were released to these SHSs on the Ist November, 2023.
Why does this government like sharing expired food items whenever government releases food items? You may recall when flood disaster struck sections of Wa Municipal in 2019, the Vice President and the 2024 Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia paid a visit to sympathize with the flood victims, and his best effort was to donate expired food items to the flood victims which had serious health implications on them after consuming the expired food.
We are by this release calling on the Akufo Addo Bawumia governnent to sit up to their responsibility as a government, by providing sufficient, wholesome, not expired and safe-to-eat rice to our SHSs to feed our children. We also call on them to always read about items/foodstuff before they procure and distribute same for consumption.
We are also calling on the FDA to check the safety of food items supplied to our SHSs to avert any possible food related disaster on our children. If the biological children of Akuffo Addo and Bawumia were in these schools, would they treat the children that way?
We also wish to call on government to do something about the food situation in our schools and stop the distribution of expired food items to be used to feed our children.
We will continue to monitor the situation, if nothing is done about it, we will use every legal means available to mount pressure until government does the needful. We also wish to bring to the attention of government that, our SHSs are begging for stationery for semester exams and administrative purposes as well as white board markers to enable teachers teach. For sometime now, (2 years) students have been the ones providing these important materials and they cannot
continue to buy reams of paper and board markers for teachers to use for teaching. Need we remind government that it is the responsibility of government to provide these items and not students, especially when we know that these students are not working?
We gladly would want to advise government to listen to what stakeholders especially technocrats in the Educational sector said regarding the review of the free SHS in its current fon which would bring relief to the government, parents and the students themselves, In conclusion, we call on parents to take the safety and health concems of their wards very seriously since this government doesn’t care because they don’t have their biological children in these schools.
Long live NDC, Long live Ghana
