Wa Technical Institute

One of the Oldest Technical Institutions within the Upper West Region is set to break away from the Ghana Education Service after 29 years of being under management of the Service.

It’s Now with Ghana TVET Service

Wa Technical Institute was established in 1993 under the then President Rawlings Administration, 9 years after the Region was carved out of Upper Region.

It’s currently headed by Mr. Saaka Adams.

Per A Bill tittled ‘Pre Tertiary Bill 2019’ laid before Parliament in December 2020, the Former Minister of Education, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh has proposed that Basic Schools Including Kindergarten through Primary to Junior High Schools will be managed by a Director separate from technical and Senior High Schools. Review was made in collaboration with teacher Unions for some sections to be removed.

According to the Bill, Basic Schools shall be managed by the Various Municipal and District Assemblies whilst Senior High Schools will be managed by the Regional Coordinating Council. Technical Schools will have a director separately from others. This Decision is resulting in Various Technical Schools Splitting away from the Ghana Education Service. Some of the Schools Include purely Technical Schools such St. Bastlides Technical School in Kaleo, St. Anne’s Vocational School and Nandom Technical School both in Nandom Municipality, Wa Community Vocational School in Wa, St. Clare’s Vocational School in Tumu migrating. It’s however not clear whether Youth Leadership Training Institute at Issa in the Daffiama-Bussie-Issa District will be included since it’s under the National Youth Authority (NYA).
