Parents and teachers have expressed worry over the growing sense of insecurity around the Wa Technical Institute (Wa Tech) enclave following the murder and kidnapping of security men around the area.
They feared that the miscreants behind the criminality might jump into attacking the students after they might have done killing the security men.
The Chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of the school, Mr Yakubu Elyas Salifu said if the unfortunate ever happens to the students, it will thwart the nation’s efforts of building great future leaders from the schools.
The PTA Chairman was speaking at the sidelines of a short ceremony at the school to donate some streetlight bulbs to improve brightening and security at the campus.
He called on the government and the security agencies to step up their game in clamping down on the criminality.
Mr Salifu said a delay in swift action to curtail the menace by the security agencies has the tendency to plunge the society into civil unrest as residents might take the law, and responsibility of their safety, into their hands.
He said there was the need to beef up security within the school enclave to ensure the safety of students and teachers, and to give them peace of mind to carry out academic roles.
Mr Saaka Adams, the Principal of the school, said he was particularly worried that the incidents were happening around the school vicinities.
He said he had written to the Ghana Police Service to deploy personnel to the school to improve its security.
He appealed for support to install video surveillance (CCTV) cameras at vantage points of the school to monitor and keep under check issues of crime.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service (GPS) has deployed personnel and intelligence to the Upper West Region to reassure residents of their safety.
A statement dated September 16, 2022 and signed by the Director of Public Affairs of the GPS, Grace Ansah-Akrofi, assured the people of the Wa Metropolis and its environs that the Police Administration has taken cognizance of their security concerns and has, therefore, put in measures to beef up security to ensure the safety of all persons in the Metropolis.
