Police in the Upper West Region have declared they will not be influenced by any political party in their quest to arrest the persons who allegedly set the Wa West constituency office of the NDC on fire.
The suspects, said to be loyalists of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), also destroyed a party vehicle and another vehicle belonging to the party’s constituency chairman.
The suspects were allegedly protesting the President’s nomination of one Basiera Sankara as the District Chief Executive for the Wa West district. On many occasions, the police have been accused of failing to arrest and prosecute political party supporters who have been engaged in similar attacks.
But speaking to upper west media, the Deputy Upper West Regional Police Commander, ACP Dr. Shaibu Gariba, said investigators will be professional in handling the Wa West incident. ACP Gariba assured that the police will not be “influenced or undermined by any political party.
“As you know, we have always declared our position that crime has no political color. Crime is crime, and once it has been committed, we are going to actually treat it as we do for everybody.”
He further indicated the intent of the police to be non-partisan in the investigation saying, “Whether it is coming from party A or party Z, I can assure that once we arrest, we are going to go according to the laws of the state and there is no political influence here.”
He also called on the community to cooperate with the police as the as they make attempts to apprehend the perpetrators of the crime.
“If the people are sitting down, they don’t cooperate with us and they don’t give us the needed information to be able to arrest people, I don’t think it is fair for them to blame the police that we are not working or that there is any political undertone or influence in this,” ACP Gariba added.
