Deputy Director of Africa Imagination Network(Ainet), Mr. Abubakari Saani

The Deputy Director of Africa Imagination Network (Ainet),  Mr. Abubakari Saani has tagged recent sachet water price increment as unwarranted.

In an interview with Upperwestmedia Team,  Mr. Saani Explained that the margin at which the price was increased is extremely exorbitant.

He referred to the situation as a norm only in Wa blaming business owners in the town for inflation.

“To be honest with you the development won’t help us,  for some time now sachet water producers have had inconsistencies in their prices,  usually they come out to justify issues with unsatisfactory reasons,  when you do a comparison on a regional base,  you’ll realise that the issue in Wa is an isolated case,  we know there is slight increase in production cost but that does not warrant an increase in price of water to such an extent”.

Mr. Saani also blamed the government for the sudden hikes in utility bills detailing that the free water and electricity privileges given to Ghanaians are the cause of recent hikes referring to it as daylight robbery.

“We can’t complain without blaming the government because looking at issues, we received free water and electricity in the past,  we never called for it so it’s as if government deliberately introduced it to betray us, its like a stab in the back”.

Secretary to sachet water producers association have increased prices from 1st of October,  Mr. Wiyor Abass
announced an increase in sachet water prices together with some members in September. A sachet is to be sold at Ghc0.50 whilst a bag will go for Ghc6.

Charges on utility has increased from 1st September 2022.
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) had announced the increment of electricity and water tariffs in Ghana by 27.15% and 21.55% respectively. This came into effective on 1 September 2022.

New prices have shown that the increase in tarrifs are beyond the projected figures
