Scores of schools girls in the Upper West Region are calling on their parents to educate them on menstruation and menstrual hygiene in order to prevent shame and infections during menstruation.

A cross-section of school girls speaking to Info Radio on menstrual hygiene during the international day of menstrual hygiene said, most of them are not informed about menstruation by their parents until they begin to experience their menstruation. This according to them usually embarrasses them especially when they are in schools or public places.

The school girls who were engaged by Global Communities, a not-for profit organization on a radio sensitization program on menstrual hygiene also appealed to school authorities to make provision for changing rooms for schools girls who experience their menstruation in schools. According to them, the absence of a changing room for girls in public school who experience their menstruation is always embarrassing, especially, in cases where the girls experiences their monthly flow unsuspected.

The school girls also appealed to the Ghanaian government to scrapped taxes imposed on sanitary pads to enable more girls afford the menstrual products.

Established in 2014 by the German-based NGO WASH United, International Menstrual Hygiene Day aims to create a world where every woman and girl can manage her menstruation hygienically, safely, and dignified. Since its inception, this day has grown to include various organizations, governments, and individuals worldwide, all working together to advocate for menstrual hygiene and break taboos.
