There has been doubts and misconceptions concerning how many years Rashid Anaata has been sentenced, some have speculated it was 71 Years as was being published on some media Platforms, others also alleged it was Eight years because he is to serve his prison term concurrently and not Consecutively.
The Principal State Attorney, Lawyer Saeed Abdul Shakur has explained exactly how many years Rashid is to serve in Prison.
His explanation is as follows:
The Republic vs Anaata
In case you are confused with the media reporting different number of years the Court sentenced the culprit. Here is a brief explanation.
It is 71years in total from 10 counts in three dockets.
First docket has six counts with 43years (one count 8yrs, five counts 7yrs each), second docket has three counts with 21yrs (7yrs per count), and third docket has one count with 7yrs.
However, all counts in each of the three dockets will run concurrently.
This means that, the first docket which contained 8yrs count and five counts of 7yrs each will altogether run for eight years, as the count with the highest sentence is prioritized. After that the second docket containing three counts with 7yrs each will also run altogether for seven years, then the third docket with 7yrs will follow.
In effect, Anaata will serve 8+7+7 = 22yrs
Hope this clears the confusion.
