2nd Stakeholders Conference on Language and Culture

During the 2nd Dagaare Language and Culture Conference, there was dialogue on reasons why several students aren’t motivated to pursue Ghana Language(Dagaare) as a subject and a profession In Education.

In a Stakeholder engagement at GNAT Hall in Wa on Friday, 14th October 2023.
Some setbacks outlined included,
Linguistic Endangerment

“In recent years, there has been noticeable decline in the use of Dagaare Language amongst the youth, modernization, urbanization and the influence of dominant languages such as English, Akan has posed a challenge of Transmission of Dagaare to the Younger generations”.

Secondly, Cultural Erosion, There was a discussion on how fast our culture is gradually depleting without protection, our history, festivals are drafted by strangers.

Globalization and Modernization has affected our Language and Culture.

Social Stigma, “Younger generation have the believe that the culture and language of their forefathers have no relevance or meaning, they believe English is Dominant and Respected.”

How to Reverse these Developments

Dagaare Should be Prioritized in Educational Institutions
Teachers and Facilitator should desist from physically Assaulting students for speaking Dagaare in the name of Vernacular.

Influence of Parents, or parents do not speak Dagaare to the children, they resort to English and this is a major problem.

Media and Technology: The Language should be published and Documented in the Dictionaries.
