Director of Upper West Regional Coordinating Council, Mr. Peter Maala has outlined the cutton production companies in Upper West and their functionality state.

In his address to businesses and other Stakeholders at Blue Hill Hotel, Mr. Maala indicated that Upper West has two cotton factories, one in Wa and Another at Tumu in the Sissala East Municipality. The two factories are now Defunct, meaning they are no longer functioning.

SUMMARY OF COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGES EXTRACTIVE INDUSTRIES

Evidence of substantial deposits of clay, gold & iron ore can be harnessed for small scale industries There are large deposits of rocks suitable for quarries to serve the construction industry. The region has competitive advantage in cotton production.

Two cotton ginneries (now defunct) were established at Wa and Tumu to process the seed cotton into lint.
The business community is welcome to partner the Region in revitalizing the cotton industry.

In March 2017, The Tumu Kuoru, Kuoru Richard Babini Kanton has pleaded with government to revamp the defunct Cotton Ginnery in Tumu.

Meanwhile in March 2018, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has hinted that government will revamp the defunct Tumu Cotton Ginnery in line with the implementation of the “One-District-One-Factory” policy.
