
The Member of Parliament for Wa West, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has confirmed that peace has been restored in the communities of Kendeu and Lassie Tuolu following a violent conflict on 15 June 2024.
Addressing a press conference on Sunday (16 June, 2024), the Wa West legislator confirmed that the situation in both Kendeu and Lassie Tuolu has largely stabilised.“While there are still apprehensions and suspicions, calm has largely returned to the area,” he said.
He cautioned, however, that the calm is still unpredictable and urged continued vigilance and cooperation from all parties involved.He commended the swift and effective response of the Ghana Police Service, the military, Ghana Immigration Service, and other security agencies, acknowledging their significant role in restoring stability to the region.
“Their efforts have been crucial in bringing back calm to the area,” Toobu noted.Peter Lanchene Toobi expressed his gratitude to the media for their patience and understanding as he gathered accurate information from the ground.“I wanted to ensure that I could provide a credible account of the events,” he started.The MP extended his deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
He lamented the disruption of the longstanding peaceful coexistence between the two communities and called for a collective effort to prevent such incidents in the future.Toobu emphasised the need for the communities to focus their energies on combating common challenges such as poverty, deprivation, ignorance, and underdevelopment.
“If there is any battle to fight, we should unite to fight against poverty, deprivation, ignorance, and underdevelopment,” he urged.He also called on the media and the public to be cautious of misinformation, urging them to verify facts before dissemination to avoid exacerbating tensions.
He clarified that the conflict is specifically between the communities of Lassie Tuolu and Kendeu, not between the broader groups of Brifo and Waala.“Understanding these nuances is crucial for providing effective support and finding lasting solutions,” he noted.Regarding the actions of the police and security agencies, Toobu refrained from commenting in detail, emphasising the importance of allowing these agencies to perform their duties without interference.
He assured the public that his role is to represent the people and work diligently behind the scenes to restore peace.“We must remain hopeful that the current calm will be maintained and strengthened in the coming days,” he said.
