From the Liberal Peoples Party to the Ghana Union Movement; the National Democratic Congress to the New Patriotic Party; The Peoples National Convention to the Convention Peoples Party; From the New Force to Others, political party youth activist has the pledge to demonstrate peace before, during and after the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
The political party youth activist made this pledge in an NCCE youth engagement session in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region.
Mr. Tahiru Lukman the Chief Executive Officer of Ideapath Consult spoke on Youth contribution to peaceful electoral outcomes- before, during and after the 2024 election; inter-religious tolerance; and misinformation.
Mr. Tahiru Lukman urged young people to exemplify peace and tolerance as the surest way to promote peaceful co-existence, cohesion and a successful electoral outcome.
Mr. Tahiru Lukman reminded political party youth activists and sympathizers of the danger of intolerance and the political upheaval that is happening in the West African sub-region coupled with violent extremism.
Mr. Tahiru Lukman particularly mentioned political tension in Togo, Ivory Coast, Mali, Chad, Burkina Faso, Gabon, and others as a wake-up call for Ghana to work towards democratic consolidation. Mr. Tahiru Lukman stated this;
“Youth political activists are very key stakeholders in political party machinery; young people are often exploited and used to carry out attacks, intimidations, and ballots snacking; the youth of Wa West Constituency have been conducting themselves positively; however, we cannot take effort in working to consolidate our democratic gains for granted; young peoples should appreciate party politics as a contest of ideas and exemplify peace and tolerance; with this Ghana will once again emerged victorious in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections”
The Wa West District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) Madam Esther Suglo in her speech urged young people to be more tolerant of divergent views.
She particularly urged political party youth activities to be responsible for their actions and not to allow politicians to exploit their interests and weaknesses for electoral gains. He cautioned young people to appreciate the fact that everything has a price and peace cannot be compromised under any circumstances.
Mr. Victor E. Nuworkpor, Upper West Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education, who was on a monitoring visit and fully participated in the interaction, also advised political party activists to adhere to democratic and electoral rules.
He specifically recommends tolerance for opposing viewpoints and not undermining election protocol. Mr. Victor E. Nuworkpor stated that political party activists should communicate civilly and conduct themselves in a way that promotes peace, coexistence, and tolerance during the election campaign process.
Mr. Victor E. Nuworkpor further observed that the toxic political atmosphere in the West African sub-region is a cause of concern, and Ghana’s democracy, which has been the most stable, is the envy of many; and for that matter for Ghana to solidify its democratic credentials, young people must preach and practice peace.
Forty (40) participants included political party youth activists and officials from the National Commission for Civic Education’s Wa West District Directorate. The European Union (EU) financed the initiative titled Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism (PCVE) Action in Ghana’s Northern Regions.
