From September 2021 Till April 2025, Several first time Nominees to occupy positions as MMDCEs in Upper West Region have been rejected by Assembly Members.
A popular development was in September 2021 after a Young Upper West Regional Communication Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Bukari Ali faced the unfortunate development as a DCE Nominee of Wa West under the New Patriotic Party’s Administration.
On the 19th of September 2021, Mr. Bukari Ali was Nominated by then president Akufo-Addo as Wa West DCE Nominee.
He wasn’t confirmed by the Assembly after he polled 15 ‘Yes’ Votes, 26 ‘No’ Votes out of a Total of 41 Votes.
He was renominated by the President, was able to crosses 50 percent Mark by polling 22 Yes Votes and 18 No Votes which was below the two-third majority of Assembly Required.
He was replaced by Madam Visa Diorotey, a Teacher, who was later confirmed.
Secondly, Wa East DCE Nominee, Adamu Sayibu was rejected, the Wa East District Assembly on the 17th of April 2025 rejected Mr. Sayibu’s Candidature as DCE Nominee. Mr Sayibu Polled 13 Votes out of 36 Votes, 36.11% which meant that he couldn’t stand a second chance for another election.
Thirdly, Mary Haruna was rejected by the Nadowli-Kaleo District Assembly on the 28th of April 2025 after Securing 24 ‘Yes’ and 28 ‘No’ Votes out of 52. This meant that she failed to meet two-third majority for Approval.
The Decision is currently in the Hands of the President to Either Renominate Madam Mary Haruna and Mr Adamu Sayibu or Opt for Different Individuals.
Mary Haruna is the Women’s Organizer of the NDC in Nadowli-Kaleo.
However there were some other rejections in 2021 but those rejected weren’t first time nominees.
Mr. Martin Bombanire, Lawra MCE was renominated after serving as MCE from 2017 to 2020 but he was rejected in 2021.
Secondly, Madam Christine Amadu, former MCE of Jirapa was also rejected after she was renominated.
