Several constituency chairmen of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Upper West Region reportedly boycotted President John Dramani Mahama’s Thank You Tour, which commenced in the region as part of his nationwide gratitude visit following the 2024 general elections. The absence of these key party figures has sparked concerns and raised questions about internal party dynamics.
Sources within the NDC indicate that the boycott stems from dissatisfaction among some constituency chairmen over the ongoing selection process for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs). The chairmen allegedly feel overlooked in the appointment process, despite their significant contributions to the party’s victory in the region during the 2024 elections.
While the exact reasons for the boycott remain unclear, the vetting of 165 MMDCE aspirants in the Upper West Region, which began on January 20, 2025, has been a focal point of contention. Some chairmen claim that their preferred candidates or their own aspirations for MMDCE roles were disregarded, fueling tensions within the party’s regional structure.
President Mahama, during his tour, has been engaging with traditional leaders, party executives, and supporters to express gratitude for their support. However, the absence of some constituency chairmen has cast a shadow over the otherwise celebratory visit. Efforts to reach the boycotting chairmen for comment were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
The NDC regional leadership has yet to issue an official statement addressing the boycott or the concerns raised. Political analysts suggest that the party must act swiftly to resolve these internal grievances to maintain unity ahead of the 2028 elections.
