Concerned farmers in the Sissala area are urging the formation of a dedicated Farmers Association aimed at advocating for fair pricing of agricultural commodities, with a particular focus on maize. They highlight that the prices for essential inputs, especially fertilizers, have surged drastically, creating a significant imbalance that adversely affects their ability to cultivate crops this year.

During the community voices segment of the Sissala Radio morning show earlier today, many farmers expressed their frustrations. They questioned the apparent disparity in pricing, pointing out that while the price of maize has plummeted, the costs of farming inputs—such as fertilizers, tractor services, and chemicals—remain unreasonably high.

This has left farmers feeling economically vulnerable and concerned about the sustainability of their farming operations.

The majority of callers echoed the sentiment for establishing a Farmers Association to organize collective action, including demonstrations across all Sissala communities. They believe that a unified front could effectively pressure authorities to acknowledge their plight.

Farmers are calling on local assembly members and government officials to take immediate action by implementing initiatives that ensure the purchase of maize and soybeans at fair and sustainable prices.

They warned that without prompt intervention to stabilize the costs of fertilizers and other essential farming inputs, they might resort to halting the movement of maize and soybeans out of the Sissala area. Such a measure would be a last resort but reflects their determination to protect their livelihoods and advocate for equitable agricultural practices.
