A Hybrid School Proprietor, Mr. Williams Ayaaba Akongbabre Recently Recognized and Awarded by Joy News for his impact in Society has taken some steps to carryout some corporate Social Responsibilities by Financing Educational expenses of Children who lost their Parents Through Serial Killings in Upper West Region.

Mr. Williams, CEO of Willi-Gif College of Arts and Technology spoke at length with Upper West Media Team At his School in Mid July.

Narrative

I’m from Upper East Region but I live in Upper West, I think I have lived here for the past Decade.

I’m a public servant and I also do private things, my private things are purely community development oriented, trying to serve the less privileged and the less underserved basically this is what I can say about myself, education wise I can say I have gone to school up till the Graduate level.

What inspired you to Uplift the Less Privileged, Most Especially in the Upper West Region?

There are a lot of factors that inspired me to do so, growing up as a child, looking at where I come from, struggling to take care of yourself from childhood and the challenges that I saw along the line is one of the motivations apart from that, as a community worker, I work in the community and I see people are undeserved, people are vulnerable , access to quality education, there are issues, health care issues and other social welfare privileges that some children are being denied or being deprived of so I took it upon my self that given the opportunity I’ll give my quota back to the community by uplifting these people in Ghana and not only Upper West Per say.

In an Estimate, How Many of these Individuals have Benefitted So Far?

So many, I can estimate them in Thousands, this is one of the projects you can see, this is a Hybrid School in this school, I integrate children with special needs, children with low learning capabilities and children with different types of challenges are all integrated here and I provide inclusive education to them using various practical and creative approaches. So here as we speak, the orphans that have been given scholarships in this project are about 31. As I speak to you I have written to the department of social welfare and Ghana Police Service.

I have tried to reach out to victims of the Tragic Incident in Wa, the Serial killing the orphans, some of them are here as a result of that tragic incident, I’m going to give them 100% Basic Education.

How can others Come onboard?

It’s a free entry provided You’re needy, orphan and poor even though I cannot boast of having the capacity to enroll everyone but of course there is a quota that I can always handle because this thing I’m doing I don’t have any sponsorship, I have never landed any sponsorship maybe apart from little gifts and other things Wa Naa for example has donated a land to me at the Nayiri Pelpuo residential Area and that is fantastic but in terms of funding, not yet and so it’s about being poor, needy and orphan.

And the project that does that is the Scholarship Scheme for needy children , I have an NGO that is what I even started with, you know, because I couldn’t get sponsorship for my orphans that’s why I started this school so that I can use that as a medium to provide scholarship to my orphans and also create Enterprise that will bring some little income to be able to take care of other expenses of the orphans and do under that NGO and it’s project, one takes a form, fills it and we investigate and find out your status and then you can benefit but the challenge is that when you spoke you mentioned those who are far Away, yes! There are modalities even with us, as you can see it’s not well constructed in terms of infrastructure and other things which by the grace of God we are praying to do so but with regards to those from the hinterlands, far communities, it’s because we don’t have boarding facilities, can you imagine some someone coming from Holimuni, Kundugu, Nyivil, Katua or Wallembelle to attend school here and go back, it’s purely impossible, we’re unable to grant scholarships to people in those areas. I am hoping that in future if I establish a boarding facility we can enroll them.

Where do you intend to Establish this Boarding Facility?

For now that Decision has not been Taken, Wa Naa has commenced steps to process that land document for us, though the land is not big, it’s half an Acre, that’s about two plots, where to establish the boarding Facility is not known yet, that’s a decision to take, even as we speak the resources aren’t available yet.

Has the Recognition by Joy News Impacted You Positively?

The Joy News Impact Makers Awards Has been Fantastic, an uplifter in my life and I feel satisfied, I want to talk about my inner satisfaction even before the external one, the sort of videos that were brought out by Joy News Accross Ghana, things that were hidden, I could not even remember, people gave videos out, I’m satisfied that I’m being celebrated Alive, I see that at funeral ms but I saw it life, people talked good about me, that satisfaction is something I cannot measure.

Apart from that, I see people wanting to come close after the Joy News Awards, people are trying to partner with me,as I speak to you we are revamping my projects trying to form a strong team, link up for donor funding and all of that and it’s fantastic and I’m hoping for a lot of things. When I came from Accra and I paid courtesy calls to various Dignitaries in Upper West, talk about the Wa Naa, the Regional Minister, the Tendamba, the Chief Imam, the Yeri Naa and all other Dignitaries, they were all happy and spoke well and gave in their full support to support me as and when possible and I believe with all these, the Joy News Impact Makers Awards is going to give me better opportunities to be able to serve these little ones and the mother Ghana from which we all come from.

Are all these Children Orphans??

They are not all dependant on Scholarships, Some of them have well to do parents, It’s a hybrid school so children from all these backgrounds, hinterlands, underserved backgrounds, we depend on each other, we form a robust academic environment that is capable of stimulating academic excellence and so that is the kind of Community we are building. As joy News described in my citation, we are creating a model that is blending education, enterprise and Impact and that is what I’m doing over here.
Other projects I do in the communities is to serve the less privileged.
