The Upper West Regional Police Command has made a significant breakthrough with the arrest of two suspects believed to be responsible for 15 murder cases in the Wa Municipality since 2021. The suspects were linked to killings predominantly targeting watchmen, involving strangulation or fatal head injuries. The arrests follow months of intelligence work and community cooperation that culminated in the capture of Sherif Abdulai and Mahamuda Lamin.
The Upper West Regional Police Command, under the leadership of ACP Francis K. Yiribaare, announced a major development in the investigation of murder cases plaguing the region since 2021. “Our intelligence, investigations, and operations teams have been following all leads to unravel these cases, which include fifteen murder incidents recorded between 2021 and 2022,” the Regional Commander stated.
The victims, mostly watchmen, were attacked either by strangulation or blunt force trauma to the head. The most recent case involved the murder of a watchman, Mr. Issah Yahaya, found dead in Wa-Dobile on September 21, 2025. “After weeks of intense intelligence work, we have successfully arrested two suspects, Sherif Abdulai, aged 30, and Mahamuda Lamin, aged 25, who are believed to be behind these murders,” said ACP Yiribaare.
The investigation was bolstered by the support of the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tettch Yohuno, who deployed a special team to assist in the regional inquiries. The suspects were arrested on October 3 and October 6, 2025, with evidence recovered linking them to the crimes, including stolen property from one of the victims. Sherif Abdulai confessed to killing 13 people in the area since 2021, targeting mainly watchmen and mentally challenged persons.
ACP Yiribaare praised the police team and the public’s role: “On behalf of the Inspector-General and the Regional Command, I commend all officers who worked tirelessly on this case. We are also thankful to members of the public for their cooperation and timely flow of information which significantly aided the investigation.” He assured that the police remain committed to bringing all perpetrators to justice and appealed for anyone with further information to come forward.
The police are continuing investigations to determine if others are involved and have secured all recovered items for forensic analysis. Suspect Mahamuda Lamin was remanded in police custody by the Wa Magistrate Court and is due to reappear on October 21, 2025.
