In the heart of a remote village, far from the comfort of any health facility, a life-and-death moment unfolded. A pregnant woman, referred to the Wa Municipal Hospital for delivery, went into labor unexpectedly on her way. Her husband stood helpless by the roadside, desperate and afraid.

By divine providence, Senior Enrolled Nurse Iddris Abdul Latif of Gudaayiri CHPS happened to be passing by. Without hesitation, he stopped, assessed the situation, and rushed into the nearby bush—where the woman was struggling in labor.

With no medical equipment, no sterile environment, and no backup team, he relied solely on his skill, courage, and compassion. Under those harsh and risky conditions, he safely delivered the baby, saving both mother and child.

Such dedication reflects the true spirit of Ghana’s rural health heroes—working selflessly, often without recognition, adequate resources, or incentives.

This extraordinary act is not just a story of service, but one of sacrifice, humanity, and duty. The government and health authorities are therefore humbly called upon to recognize and support Nurse Iddris Abdul Latif, whose bravery and commitment to saving lives exemplify the best of our healthcare system.

Mother and baby are alive today because one nurse refused to look away.
