TRAGIC INCIDENT AT MILITARY RECRUITMENT GROUNDS HIGHLIGHTS
GHANA’S YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT CRISIS
The Upper West Regional Youth Parliament deeply regrets the tragic loss of six young lives, and
numerous injuries sustained during a stampede at the recent military recruitment event in Accra.
This heartbreaking incident shines a light on the urgent issue of youth unemployment that has
plagued our nation, driving countless individuals to seek opportunities in the military as a means of
securing their future.
As we mourn the lives lost, we must also confront the systemic issues that led to such desperate
circumstances. The increasing number of applicants and the resulting overcrowding at recruitment events are stark indicators of the profound lack of job opportunities for our youth. With a substantial portion of our population under the age of 35, the current unemployment rate is not merely a statistics; it represents the dreams and aspirations of thousands of young people yearning for a better life.
The high demand for military positions highlight the length at which our youth will go to find
employment. They are willing to risk their safety in pursuit of a chance to contribute to their nation
and to secure their livelihoods. This scenario is unacceptable, and it reflects a broader failure to
create sustainable job opportunities across various sectors.
A recollection of history reveals that in the past, the youth were forced into the military. In contrast, today’s youth are struggling with all their might to secure recruitment into the military. This is a clear indication of a lack of, or inadequate, alternative means of employment.
We call on the government and relevant stakeholders to take immediate and decisive action to address this crisis. We appreciate the President of the Republic for his swift visit to the injured and urge him to expedite action on the 24-hour economy, among other measures, to reduce the growing rate of youth unemployment, which is fast becoming a national security threat.
We must not allow this tragedy to be forgotten; it should serve as a catalyst for change. Let us
work together to ensure a future where our youth are no longer forced into dangerous situations in
search of employment. We also admonish other security services to take a cue from this
unfortunate incident and implement appropriate measures to prevent the needless loss of youthful
lives.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and continue to pray for the
swift recovery of those injured.
END!!!
