The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) in the Upper West Region, led by ASP Alhaji Iddi Ziblim, has embarked on a special enforcement operation within the Wa Municipality on Wednesday, January 21, 2026 aimed at clamping down on rising road indiscipline among motorists and motorbike riders.

The operation, which took place along the principal streets and major traffic corridors of Wa, forms part of proactive measures by the Ghana Police Service to address the increasing rate of road traffic crashes and fatalities recorded in the region. Statistics indicate that a significant number of these unfortunate incidents have occurred within the Wa Municipality, largely due to reckless riding, speeding, non-observance of traffic regulations, and disregard for road safety measures.

During the exercise, officers arrested and impounded approximately fifty (50) motorbikes for various traffic offences, including riding without helmets, lack of valid documentation, careless and dangerous riding, overloading, and disobedience to traffic signs and signals. All impounded motorbikes have been conveyed to the MTTD Office in Wa for further investigation and appropriate action in accordance with the law.

ASP Alhaji Iddi Ziblim emphasized that the operation is not intended to punish road users unnecessarily, but rather to promote discipline, safeguard lives, and ensure the safety of all road users. He reiterated the commitment of the MTTD and the Regional Police Command to sustain such enforcement exercises alongside public education to reduce road crashes and fatalities in the region.
The Upper West Regional Police Command is therefore appealing to drivers and riders to strictly adhere to road traffic regulations, wear protective gear, avoid speeding, and exercise patience and courtesy on the road. Members of the public are also encouraged to cooperate with the Police and report reckless road behavior to help make the roads safer for everyone.
