The decision by the Upper West Region to establish a “Sheapark Resource Hub” marks a bold and commendable step toward strengthening the shea industry in northern Ghana.

The initiative presents a model worth emulating across the five regions of the northern ecological zone, where the shea tree remains one of the most valuable economic resources.

The shea plant has long been a major contributor to local livelihoods. Its fresh fruits serve as a natural protein source. When processed, the seeds produce oil used for cooking, soap production, export, and various health applications. Even at the end of its productive life cycle, the shea tree remains useful; its trunk can be converted into firewood or charcoal, further supporting household needs.

Across the Savannah Region, the shea sector continues to show renewed promise. The Buipe Shea Factory, located in the Central Gonja District, had previously become dormant but has been revived in recent years. The factory’s resurgence—reportedly accelerated under President John Dramani Mahama—has been further strengthened by the efforts of Buipewura Jinapor II, who is actively engaging key state bodies to secure sustainable funding and expansion opportunities.

Such developments demonstrate that the shea industry holds enormous economic potential for northern Ghana. With strategic support, the sector can boost household incomes, enhance export earnings, and reduce poverty levels. This makes continued investment both a regional and national priority.

Government, investors, traditional authorities, NGOs, CSOs, and private actors are all being encouraged to contribute to sustaining gains in the shea value chain.
Equally, communities across Savannah, Northern, Upper West, Upper East, and North East Regions must take responsibility for growing and protecting shea trees and other important economic species.

The Upper West Region’s latest initiative builds on this momentum. In a recent announcement, the Upper West Regional Minister, Lawyer Charles Lawnga Puozuing, revealed that the “Upper West Sheapark Resource Hub” forms part of a broader regional development plan aimed at providing centralized data for investors and empowering stakeholders to make informed decisions.

The official launch is scheduled for January 31, 2026, at the Wa Naa Palace.

The Minister made the announcement during engagements with the Kojokperi Traditional Council on January 23, as part of an ongoing regional tour to reinforce collaboration with traditional authorities.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to rural development through the establishment of Farmer Service Centres to ensure farmers have access to affordable inputs such as fertilizer, tractor services, and seeds—not solely for profit but to enhance agricultural productivity, reports digmarobert.com
