EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES: THE CALL FOR WA SOUTH DISTRICT CREATION
In a historic move indicating the collective voice of community leadership, traditional chiefs from Bulenga and Manwe in the Upper West Region have presented a fervent petition for the establishment of a new Wa South District. This proposal, which aims to carve a distinct administrative District out of the existing Wa East District with Bulenga as its capital, is not just a plea for territorial restructuring but a significant step toward local empowerment and development.
During a recent visit by the Upper West Regional Minister, Hon. Charles Puizuing Lwanga Esq., Paramount Chief Naa Seidu Nawologime IV and President of the Manwe Traditional Council, Naa Alhaji Abubakari Yussif Wiah, articulated the aspirations and pressing needs of their communities. This initiative is long overdue, echoing years of advocacy by the region’s leaders, reflecting a yearning for autonomy that can better address local challenges and aspirations.
The chiefs highlighted critical developmental priorities such as the completion of the Wa-Bulenga road, upgrading healthcare facilities, and enhancing educational access through the establishment of new schools. They also raised concerns about water scarcity, advocating for the construction of a dam to support agricultural and domestic needs during dry seasons.
Minister Lwanga’s acknowledgment of these needs and his assurance to relay them to President John Dramani Mahama during his anticipated visit next week provides a beacon of hope for the communities. The planned launch of a regional investment blueprint is poised to attract much-needed resources to the Upper West Region, potentially transforming the socio-economic landscape.
As we stand at this pivotal juncture, let us rally behind the call for a Wa South District. It embodies not just a subdivision of boundaries, but a monumental stride towards self-determination, local governance, and sustainable development. Together, we can further the goal of peace, security, and prosperity for all residents in this vibrant region.
