A Wrongly detained Young Man by Name Donle Jaba has been released from Prison Custody after stakeholder intervention.

DSP Joseph Kpiriko, spokesperson for the Service, presented Jaba with cash and a traditional smock. The initiative was described as a means to help him revive his weaving business and facilitate his transition back into society after years of unjust Detention in Wa Central Prison for 17 Years.

Responses to the gesture have been divided. Some praised the Prisons Service for addressing Jaba’s situation and offering assistance, while others argued that financial support and clothing cannot compensate for nearly two decades of lost freedom. Online discussions reflected the controversy, with one critic asking: “Can money and clothes ever repay 17 years of wrongful imprisonment?”

The case highlights the contentious President’s Pleasure clause, which allows indefinite detention without trial and often involves mental health evaluations. Jaba’s release was made possible through persistent advocacy by Crispin Wura-sey Ziekah of the Legal Aid Commission, alongside the involvement of the state attorney, fire commander ADP James B. Mwinyelle, and CHRAJ.

Jaba’s story has become a powerful illustration of systemic flaws in Ghana’s justice system and has amplified calls for reforms, accountability, and stronger protections for detainees who are vulnerable to wrongful confinement.
