SUBJ: SUSPECTED ILLICIT DRUGS AND EXPLOSIVES BUSTED AT THE BABILE INLAND CHECKPOINT.
DATE: 23RD March, 2026.
Good evening. On behalf of the Upper West Regional Commander of the Ghana Immigration Service, DCOI JUSTICE BOSOMTWI-AYENSU, I release this presser:
On Monday, 23rd March, 2026, following a well calculated Intel, the vigilant Immigration Service personnel on duty at the Babile Inland Checkpoint intercepted a Hyndai truck with registration number AC-1426-22 carrying among other things ‘SUSPECTED DRUGS AND EXPLOSIVES’ from Kumasi in the Ashanti towards Hamile in the Upper West Region.
As part of our preliminary investigation efforts and owing to the fact that security is a shared responsibility, a joint inspection of agencies composed of the GIS, Ghana Police Service, the Narcotics Control Commission and GRA was conducted on 26th March, 2026. The inspection revealed the presence of concealed prohibited items such as:
i. 20 pcs of detonating devices
ii. 33 pcs x 10 x 79 sacks of Tanubyn dynamite
iii. 10 pcs x 50 x 200 boxes of 225mg Royal Tramol Kings [a brand of tramadol]
iv. 10 pcs x 50 x 208 boxes of 225mg Royal Tramal King [another brand of tramadol].
It’s clear that the concealment were intended to outsmart the highly vigilant and resilient personnel at post but in vain.
These contraband goods were covertly concealed and hidden under non-contraband goods in order to trick the trained professionals.
However, the officers knew what exactly they were doing and thus chose the state over illegality, criminality, material ‘offers’ or ‘inducement’.
A full-scale investigation is ongoing aimed at roping in all those involved in this illegality to allow the law to take its just course.
As part of our frantic efforts to combat criminal activities, we urge the good people of the Upper West Region to remain calm and to call for our services whenever and wherever necessary. As a service, we relish the collaboration, engagement and strategic proactive community policing. Equally, we celebrate the reigning cohesion between the good people of the Upper West Region and the state security agencies.
That said, we take this opportunity to announce that under the circumstances, anyone who stands our way in the discharge of our mandate must become the way. There can be no “Ifs” and “Buts”!.
As partners and allies in the fight against crime, we thank the media so much for your time and patience. Together we can!
Signed: INSP. IBN YUSSIF DURANAH ABDUL-MUMIN SEIDU
