Residents of Deriziile, in the Tuori electoral area of the Daffiama Bussie Issa District, are grappling with financial challenges in completing a maternity ward project intended to improve healthcare delivery.

The community, which already has a Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound offering basic care, initiated the construction of a maternity ward along with two bungalows to support maternal health services.

However, progress has stalled due to funding constraints, as the project is being financed solely through community contributions.

The residents in an interview with Info Radio expressed concern over the slow pace of work and the increasing financial burden. They are now appealing to government and other stakeholders for assistance to complete the facility.

The Community Health Management Committee (CHMC) Organizer, Kpieobare Blaise, said the project was conceived as a self-help initiative to ensure accessible maternal healthcare for all, particularly the most vulnerable.

He noted that worsening economic conditions have made it difficult for residents to continue funding construction.

“Although this is a community-driven project, its benefits will extend beyond Deriziile to the wider district and even the country,” he stated.

Some residents say the financial strain has also led to tensions within the community. A 70-year-old resident, Tatiere Arenituma, said she has been unable to contribute due to lack of funds, despite her willingness to support the project. According to her, this has resulted in accusations from others that she is unwilling to help, causing emotional distress.

Meanwhile, the CHMC Secretary, Vuu Barnabas, explained that the project also includes accommodation for nurses and student nurses to ensure consistent healthcare delivery.

He appealed to their Member of Parliament, Dr Sebastian Sandaare, and the District Chief Executive, James Wor, to support the initiative or facilitate government intervention to enable its completion.

Residents say completing the maternity ward will significantly improve access to skilled maternal care and reduce the risks associated with childbirth in the community.
