The Queens were kept on the back foot by the
Cameroonians for a large part of the match but
they remained defensively solid until they got
the penalty. Ghana started the final as underdogs
especially losing to Cameroon in the final round
of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games qualifiers and
the Cameroonians went on the offensive early
in the match to get the goal but they were let
down by poor finishing and the occasional bad bounce of the ball on the pitch. The Queens went on the break late in the
match but Edem Atovor was fouled by a
Cameroonian defender in the penalty area
forcing the referee Marximina Benardo to point
to the spot. Kotoko Ladies’ Aduaku saw her kick saved by
Cameroonian goalie Annette Ngo Ndom but an
attempted rebound by Aduaku which was
blocked by the goalkeeper sent the ball into the
air. The Cameroonian defence headed it away but
the ball fell to Boakye who fired in a left-footed
volley into the roof of the net to give Ghana the
win and the gold medal.
