Women at Piisi in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region, who are into active farming of food crops and vegetables, are appealing to government, individual tractor owners and Non-Governmental Organizations for adequate and timely availability of tractors in the community, especially during farming season.
In an interview with Info Radio, the female farmers at the community lament that, unless their male counterparts exhaust ploughing their farmlands, they cannot access any of the few tractors in the community.
Madam Gladys, a Unit Committee Member for the Piisi Electoral Area, who said this on behalf of the women, noted that women cannot engage in meaningful farming due to the difficulty in accessing tractor services.
She further stated that with the implementation of government’s flagship agricultural program, Planting for Food and Jobs, which could be more helpful to women farmers, they are however unable to derive the maximum benefit of the program due to the lack of timely access to ploughing services.
She added that due to insufficient financial strength, they find it difficult to purchase fertilizer and other required farm inputs.
They therefore appealed to government, NGOs and individual tractor owners to come to their aid
