A JHS 2 Pupil of Mwankuri M/A Junior High School in the Upper West Region of Ghana has become the latest victim of rape in the Jirapa Municipality.

According to Core News’ sources, the fifteen (15) year old victim was allegedly raped at knife and gunpoint in the night of January 7, 2022.
Sources close to the family of the victim say the suspect, alleged to be a Fulani man brandished a short gun and a matchet and threatened to use them to kill the poor JHS 2 girl and her mother if they dared to blow any alarm.

“They [victim and her mother] stay alone. They told us that at about 2am, the victim and her mother were deeply asleep when the criminal stormed into their bed room. They both woke up to the horrible sight of a gun and matchet wielding young Fulani man who ordered them to remain quiet and co-operate or get prepared to die.”

“For fear of being killed, they obeyed the orders
and the mother was locked in the bedroom and the daughter taken to the yard and sexually assaulted” a source in Mwankuri told corenews.gh.
The source revealed that when the incident happened, the suspect and his father were invited by the landlord for Mwankuri but that upon seeing the victim’s brother in the meeting, the suspect sensed a move to arrest him and therefore requested for permission to attend to nature’s call but never returned.

Speaking to Core News Ghana, Hon. Kanbonne S. Evans who is the Assembly member for the area indicated that the entire Mwankuri community has been in a state of confusion after the incident. “Investigators have told us that nothing can be done to get justice for the innocent victim until the suspect is arrested. We are worried the police can not pressurize the Fulani who is reluctant to bring his son to carry his own cross”.

“It is a fact that, the father of suspect has not shown any seriousness in telling us the whereabout of his son”.
According to him, the Fulani Chief in Mwankuri, a blood brother to the suspect’s father had told them that his brother knew the whereabout of the suspect but has since failed to give information that could lead to his arrest.

“The father of the suspect has also relocated claiming he was advised to do so on security reasons. Investigators have not also shown enough commitment as far as the pursuit for justice for the poor girl and her mother is concerned. We are confused. We need the support of all stakeholders to secure justice for the victims of this criminal act.” He pleaded

Meanwhile, Police disclosed to corenewsgh.com that even though they have knowledge of the case, it is been handled by Police at Han.

According to Chief Inspector Francis Ackon of the Jirapa Police Station, the use of conventional means to solve cases is making their work strenuous. He indicated the alleged knife and gunpoint rape at Mwankuri could have been held better if the community had involved the police earlier.
He advised the people of Jirapa to avoid the use of conventional means to solving criminal cases.

Core News Ghana can authoritatively report that the rate of rape and defilement in Jirapa has risen beyond imagination. In the Mwankuri community alone, about five cases of rape or defilement have been recorded in recent times.
