Wa Circuit Court

The Girls Excellence Movement (GEM) has welcomed the news of the Wa Circuit Court’s decision to sentence 35-year-old Ahmed Rashid, a well-known MC in the area, to a 71-year jail term for his heinous crimes of defiling several minors.

In a statement, GEM commended the brave girls who came forward to report the abuse, their families who stood by them and pursued justice, the diligent work of the prosecution team, and the court for delivering a verdict that serves justice to these victims.

The organisation believes that this harsh sentence sends a clear message and serves as a deterrent to other potential perpetrators, contributing to the creation of a safer environment for children, especially girls, to live, learn, and thrive.

GEM also called on other courts handling similar cases to follow this example and ensure that justice is served for victims who have suffered abuse.

The organisation stressed the importance of therapy and support for the surviving victims to aid in their healing and overall well-being as they grow into adulthood.

According to the statement, it is essential to help them navigate the trauma they have experienced in a healthy and constructive manner.

While GEM applauds this significant step towards justice, it also emphasises that true justice is not complete until the victims are provided with the necessary therapeutic assistance to aid in their recovery and healing process.
