The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has officially launched the Malaria Vaccine Implementation Programme (MVIP) in the Upper West Region, setting a goal to vaccinate over 38,000 children each year. Since the inception of the vaccination initiative in 2019, more than three million doses of the malaria vaccine have been administered across the country.

The programme in Ghana has expanded from 42 to 93 districts, now encompassing areas in the Ahafo, Bono, Bono East, Central, Oti, Upper East, and Volta regions during its second phase. In phase three, an additional 43 districts have been included, with all 11 districts in the Upper West Region being newly added.

During the programme’s launch, Dr. Damien Punguyire, Upper West Regional Director of Health Services, announced the region’s ambitious goal of reducing malaria-related mortality by 90% by the year 2025.

Under the vaccination schedule, children will receive their first dose at six months, followed by doses at seven months, nine months, and the final dose at 18 months.

Additionally, Dr. Punguyire revealed plans to conduct a measles-rubella and vitamin A supplementation vaccination campaign for children aged 9 to 59 months from October 2 to.
