Dr. Joshua Jebuntie Zaato has urgently appealed to the government, through the Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, Hon. Alhassan Suhuyini, to prioritize the improvement of the Wa-Hain-Tumu-Chuchuliga road. He stressed that upgrading this crucial transportation route is essential for reducing the cost of staple foods, particularly Banku and Kenkey, which are fundamental to the diets of many Ghanaians. By ensuring the road is well-maintained and accessible, the government could significantly lower transportation costs for food suppliers, ultimately benefiting consumers and enhancing food security across the region.
Dr. Zaato made these remarks during a panel discussion on TV3’s newspaper review program on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.
The Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana asserted that “there is a strategic road in Ghana that directly impacts the prices of Kenkey, Banku, and bread. That road is the Wa-Hain-Tumu-Chuchuliga route. The Sissala land is the food basket of this country and contributes significantly to maize production, yet this road is in deplorable condition—it is the worst road in Ghana. You can’t even describe it as a road.”
Emphasizing the road’s significance, Dr. Zaato stated, “This road passes through Ghana’s maize belt. If we fix it, it will lead to a reduction in food prices.”
He further warned that the current state of the road has serious national security implications. Expressing his concern, he found it surprising that the road was not mentioned in the budget statement presented to Parliament.
