Upper West Regional Minister Lawyer Charles Lwanga Puozuing Had a close Door Meeting with top management staff of VRA-NEDCO on Power Outages within the Region on 7th of March 2025.

He also sought for answers to why there were unplanned outages in the Region.

“You are a political leader, what you are likely to hear is that oo the party is being sabotaged and therefore they are doing it intentionally, that is the first thing you will hear but I’m always of the view that it’s better we come and take first hand information..”

Upper West Regional Manager of VRA NEDCo, Engineer Francis Yormesor, attributed the power cuts to High Electricity Demands.

“Because we are in the heat season and also adding to the heat season, we are in the fasting season a lot of heat and warming takes place and so demand has risen drastically from its normal state so the transformer is supposed to take maybe about 5 megawatts before the fasting per our recording it was around 3 megawatts, 2 to 3 megawatts but now it’s more than 5 megawatts so if it hits the set point it will cut off, when it cuts off the fans have to come on to cool the transformers before it picks up again so we have that interruption”

He said they were working on additional transformers to increase their capacity.

“Because of this demand which we least anticipated, because it’s more than 50% we are working on additional transformer to increase our capacity so we offload some of the load onto this new transformer in in no time we will be done with this work and this demand will be able to contain it”.

In April 2024, Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo commissioned the second phase of a Solar Power Plant project with an installed capacity of 15Mega Watts of power (MWp) at Kaleo, in the Upper West Region.

Before that, in October 2020, he commissioned a 6.5 Megawatt Solar Project at Lawra in the Upper West Region.
