The Fire Service in Wa is struggling to keep up with growing fire emergencies due to outdated equipment, as highlighted by a recent blaze that gutted the Nester Printing Press on the evening of August 6.
The fire, which started around 7:30 p.m., destroyed the printing facility and a nearby container before it was brought under control.
Although firefighters responded quickly, their efforts were significantly hindered when their water supply ran dry mid-operation. A second tender eventually arrived, but the damage had already been done.
According to the Wa Municipal Fire Commander, Assistant Divisional Officer Grade Iddrisu Imran, the municipality has not received any new fire tenders in over 15 years.
Firefighters are forced to rely on ageing vehicles that can no longer handle the scale of recent fire outbreaks.
“It has been over 15 years since we last received any new fire tender. The ones we have are very weak and struggle to meet the demands of fire disasters of this nature,” he said.
In an effort to improve their response capabilities, the Fire Service is collaborating with the Ghana Water Company to install fire hydrants in key locations, including the central market.
Wa Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Issah Nura Danwanaa, acknowledged the serious logistical challenges. He noted that his office recently helped repair a 25-drum fire tender and is working to restore another grounded vehicle.
He also urged residents to handle gas and electrical appliances with care to prevent future disasters.
Speaking in an interview, ADOI Iddrisu Imran called for urgent support to protect lives and property in the municipality.
