The Chief’s Palace in Gbiniyiri, a farming community in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region, has been burnt down as violence over a land dispute escalates.

The burning happened on Tuesday, August 26, just days after deadly clashes in the area left six people dead and 18 others injured. The conflict reportedly began when the local chief sold a piece of land to a private developer, but some residents opposed the sale. Tensions rose when the developer tried to work on the land and was resisted by the community.

Violence broke out on Sunday, August 24, leading to the deaths of five people. Another person was killed the next day. Many of the injured are in critical condition, with gunshot and machete wounds.

The fighting has forced many residents, especially women and children, to flee their homes. Several houses and properties have also been destroyed.

Security forces, including police and military, have been sent to the area to restore calm. However, the scattered nature of the communities makes it difficult to respond quickly.

The District Security Council (DISEC) is working with regional authorities and traditional leaders to calm tensions and encourage peaceful dialogue.

Officials are urging all sides to stop the violence and seek peaceful ways to resolve the dispute.
