The task Force constituted by the upper West regional Minister, Lawyer Charles Lwanga Puozuing to combat excessive use of tramadol in the upper West region has exposed several individuals into the sale of tramadol within the upper West region.

The upper West Regional director of food and drugs authority (FDA) Mr. Sunkpal Kelvin spoke with the media and some stakeholders including Chiefs, elders and youth groups including Jamaica Youth Group during the engagement within the spheres of the Regional Police Headquarters, that some market woman, mobile Money and Youth Camps within the upper West region were into the sale of Tramadol and needed to stopped.

Statement

The OTCs don’t sell Tramadol again because they know the effect. If you sell it and we see it we will take your License. You will not sell drugs again. But my old mother sitting at the corner who has Tramadol in her ‘Munfigikogo’, I don’t have that mandate to go and tell her to get up and I will search and see what is there.

You see, people who have opened shops and say they are doing mobile money. It’s not mobile money they are doing, they are selling tramadol in the night. If I go there, I’m not working with any of the telecommunications.
I can’t go and search the person unless I have information. You go to camps. I’m happy that we have some of the camp leaders amongst us, the various camps. In fact, some of the camps are letting them spoil your name.

So if you don’t help us, crack down on those camps who are dealing with this tramadol and we see you sitting in the camp, They assume that you are all dealing with tramadol. Meanwhile, it’s not all the camps that are dealing in tramadol.

Some go there after a very hard day’s work, they go there to sit down and discuss issues and get up and go and sleep. That is the essence of camp. I’m i lying?. You go and sit down, share your views, talk to each other, advise each other.

When it’s late you go and sleep But some of the camps too that’s not what they do, What they do is that they go and sit down and sell what? Drugs. They sell Tramadol. So the few camps that have come here, I know we know them.

It’s not that we don’t know them. Please help the task force so that we are able to stop these activities. We can stop them if possible. If we come out, we can stop them. But if we sit down and say, these people in this camp, my junior brother is part, this person is part, the problem will never get solved.

We will all be looking at the problem like that and it will be increasing. So you know what? Anybody doing the wrong thing is risking somebody. So you have to take somebody, somebody to prison, for somebody to stop.

So that is something that is killing us in Wa here. Because at the end of the day, I’m related to someone, you are related to someone.

This is a strong and timely piece that highlights a serious issue affecting the community. It’s commendable how the task force and FDA are engaging openly with chiefs, youth groups, and stakeholders to confront tramadol abuse and its sources. The call for collective responsibility and courage to speak up—even when it’s uncomfortable—comes through clearly. Raising this awareness is an important step toward protecting lives and restoring the integrity of the community.
