A female student of Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU) was reportedly stabbed during the Artist Night of the 2025/2026 SRC Week Celebration, sparking widespread concern among students over the security arrangements for the event.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred between 3:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. during the climax of the celebration, which featured Ghanaian musician Fancy Gadam and attracted a large crowd of students and members of the public.

Witnesses stated that the female student was subjected to unwanted physical advances by individuals believed to have entered the campus from the surrounding community. They further alleged that when she resisted those advances, she was violently assaulted and stabbed. Another BTU student who attempted to intervene was also reportedly assaulted. Both students sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital for emergency medical treatment.

The incident has generated serious concern among students, many of whom have questioned the level of security provided for one of the University’s largest annual events. Several students alleged that neither the University Cadet Corps nor the Ghana Police Service was visibly deployed to provide security during the programme. These claims have not been independently confirmed by the University or the SRC.

Students also expressed disappointment over what they described as the response of the SRC leadership following the incident. Some alleged that the SRC President, Isaiah Dodobatiah Balwamo, was informed about the incident but did not come to the scene. They further claimed that no member of the SRC Executive visited the injured students during the emergency or immediately afterwards to check on their welfare. These allegations have not been independently verified.

“We expected our student leaders to stand with us during such a difficult moment. When our colleagues were injured, we believed the SRC leadership would be present to coordinate assistance and provide support,” one student said.

The incident has renewed calls for the University to review security arrangements for major campus programmes. Students are urging University Management to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident, determine whether adequate security measures were in place, identify and prosecute those responsible for the assault, ensure that the victims receive the necessary medical and welfare support, and implement stronger security protocols for future events.

In addition, some students have called on the SRC President, Isaiah Dodobatiah Balwamo, to resign from office, arguing that the SRC leadership has a responsibility to ensure the safety and security of students during official SRC programmes. They contend that if the investigation establishes failures in planning or security arrangements, the leadership should accept responsibility and be held accountable.

At the time of publication, efforts to obtain comments from SRC President Isaiah Dodobatiah Balwamo, the SRC Executive, and the University authorities were unsuccessful.
