Former Wa East Parliamentary Aspirant, Hon. Prince Razak Momin Tachi, in collaboration with West African Humanitarian Aid and Friends Eye, has organised a free eye care screening and surgery exercise for residents of the Wa East District.

The initiative, which commenced on Sunday, July 26, 2026, is aimed at supporting people suffering from various eye conditions, particularly those who require surgery but are unable to afford the cost of treatment due to financial difficulties.

The exercise consists of eye screening, medication, and surgery, where necessary, to beneficiaries, with no payment required. The surgical procedures are being undertaken at the Eye Clinic of the Wa Municipal Hospital.

About 70 people underwent eye surgery on the first day, with approximately 80 more scheduled to undergo surgery on Monday, July 27, 2026. This was confirmed by the Head of the Eye Unit of the Wa Municipal Hospital, Ms Amina Braimah.

Madam Amina revealed that Hon. Razak Momin Tachi had previously supported an eye screening exercise in the Wa East District, which helped identify people requiring further treatment. She, therefore touted the latest exercise organised by Prince Razak Tachi and his partners.

Speaking to the media, a member of Hon. Prince Razak’s team monitoring the exercise, Mr. Sabit Yussif, also known as Wa East Bansintale, said the initiative was timely as there are many people suffering from eye diseases but are unable to seek medical treatment due to financial constraints.

He explained that the team had visited several zones and communities across the Wa East District to identify patients in need of eye care. Among the communities visited were Manwe, Bulenga, Loggu, Baayiri, Kundugu and Funsi.

Another member of the team, Kwata Musah, said Hon. Prince Razak Momin Tachi, as a son of Wa East, understands the challenges confronting the people and is committed to supporting them. He said the exercise was initially targeted at 100 people, but has been revised to 150 due to the numbers being recorded across the district and the organisers resolve to ensure equal access to the treatment.

He expressed satisfaction with the exercise, noting that beneficiaries who had received medication had shown appreciation and testified to the effectiveness of the drugs.

Kwata Musah further disclosed that Hon. Prince Razak Momin Tachi is working to make the exercise a regular initiative for the people of Wa East.

He said plans are also underway to provide further support for people suffering from other health conditions. He, however, emphasised that the aim is to support the people of Wa East in various aspects of life and not health alone.

Residents say Hon. Prince Razak Momin Tachi has demonstrated his commitment to the development of Wa East through his support for education, including the provision of classroom facilities, and health. Prince Razak is seen as someone who is ready to serve the people of Wa East and called on other sons and daughters of the district to emulate his example by supporting development initiatives.

A beneficiary, Madam Kwame Mariaya from Kundugu, who is yet to undergo surgery, said the treatment would greatly improve her movement and quality of life because it would enable her to see clearly.

Meanwhile, management of the Wa Municipal Hospital Eye Unit lead by Madam Amina Braimah highlighted some challenges facing the Eye Unit, major among them being the lack of a dedicated theatre. She explained that the unit currently relies on the only theatre serving the entire hospital, a situation which could increase the risk of cross-infection.

While commending Hon. Prince Razak Momin Tachi for his continuous support for the Unit, she called on other individuals, organisations and all stakeholders to support the hospital’s appeal for a dedicated theatre for the Eye Unit.

According to her, the Eye Unit is one of the leading eyecare units in the Upper West Region and therefore requires improved infrastructure and resources to provide quality eye care services to the public.

Madam Amina also urged members of the public to undergo regular eye examinations to help detect and prevent eye infections and other conditions that could lead to serious damage to the eyes. She advised the public to have their eyes checked at least once every six months.
