Residents of Sokpayiri in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region are raising concerns over deteriorating sanitary conditions in the community, warning that the situation could trigger an outbreak of cholera and typhoid if immediate action is not taken.

The residents, who spoke to W93.5 FM Community connect and development blamed the situation on the irregular evacuation of waste by the Wa Municipal Assembly.

According to them, the community’s refuse container is not emptied frequently, causing waste to overflow and emit an offensive smell.

They further noted that the container itself is old and in a poor state making effective waste management difficult.

The residents also expressed concern over stagnant wastewater from nearby bathrooms, which flows through parts of the community and creates an unhealthy environment that could serve as a breeding ground for disease-causing organisms.

They warned that unless urgent steps are taken to improve the sanitation situation the community could face serious public health challenges, especially during the rainy season.

The residents are appealing to the Wa Municipal Assembly and other relevant authorities to immediately increase the frequency of waste collection, replace the damaged refuse container and address the poor drainage system to safeguard public health.
