Han, Upper West – President John Mahama has expressed confidence that the Wa-Han road under the government’s Big Push programme will be completed by the end of 2027.

President Mahama made the statement when he inspected ongoing works on the road as part of the first day of his two-day Resetting Ghana Tour of the Upper West Region.

The Wa-Han road is one of the key projects under Phase One of the Big Push programme, which prioritises roads linking regional capitals.

“It is one of the most important roads under the Big Push programme because, when selecting the projects, we prioritised roads that link regional capitals,” President Mahama said.

He described the road as a critical link between the Upper West and Upper East regions, noting that it had remained in poor condition for decades.

“As a young child, I used to travel along this road to Tumu to visit my father’s friend. People believed that this road would never, ever be done,” he recalled.

President Mahama commended the contractor, noting that the company had a long history of delivering major road projects across the country.

He specifically recalled the contractor’s work on the Wa-Bole-Bamboi Road and other road projects in the Upper West Region.

“I remember he worked on the Wa-Bole-Bamboi Road and several other road projects in the Upper West Region,” the President said.

President Mahama expressed confidence in the quality of work and indicated that the contractor could be considered for other road projects in the region as the current project progresses.

He said the government’s strategy was to complete major trunk roads first before extending the network to feeder roads linking communities and towns to the main highways.

“The work is progressing well, and we will return next year to commission this road,” President Mahama stated.

He explained that following the double surface dressing, the entire stretch from Wa to Bolgatanga would be sealed with asphalt to improve its durability and reduce maintenance requirements.

President Mahama expressed confidence that the completed road would provide motorists with a safer and more comfortable journey between the two regional capitals.
