The Ministry of Roads and Highways has moved to de-scope parts of the Wenchi–Sawla–Bole road project after concerns that some contractors may not meet the government’s delivery timeline, Deputy Roads Minister Alhassan Suhuyini has disclosed.

Mr Suhuyini said the Minister had directed during a recent visit to the Wenchi–Sawla–Bole route that some of the works be de-scoped, with additional contractors to be brought in to accelerate construction.

“Only a couple of weeks ago, we went to Wenchi–Sawla–Bole and the minister directed that some of the works should be de-scoped because it was too much for them and they were not going to meet the timeline,” Suhuyini said on Eyewitness News on Friday, September 18, 2026

“So, for instance, if you were given 50 kilometres, you have been de-scoped to 25 kilometres, and we are preparing to introduce another contractor to do the other 25 kilometres.”

The decision forms part of efforts by the Ministry to accelerate work on major road projects and ensure contractors meet government’s delivery targets.

Mr Suhuyini said the government had a clear deadline from President John Dramani Mahama to deliver the route by the end of December 2027.

“We have marching orders from the President to deliver this route by the end of December 2027,” he said.

He said the Ministry was prepared to adjust project arrangements where existing contractors were unable to work at the required pace.

The development follows concerns over the slow progress of work on sections of the wider Wenchi–Sawla corridor.

Suhuyini said the approach was intended to prevent delays by one contractor from holding up the wider road corridor.

“We are not going to allow one contractor to hold the entire project hostage,” he said.
