The Chairman of the Hamile Town Development Committee, Alhaji Madi, assured the MP that the community’s sub-chiefs had already engaged the youth and reached an understanding that such incidents would not recur.

Chiefs in Hamile have appealed to the Member of Parliament for Lambussie, Prof. Titus Kofi Beyuo, to intervene with the Interior Minister for the possible lifting of the curfew imposed on Hamile Township and its surrounding communities.

The appeal was made during an engagement with the MP, where the traditional leaders expressed serious concerns about the economic and social effects of the curfew, which was only a day old at the time of the meeting.

According to the chiefs, despite the short period since the curfew took effect, its impact on residents and businesses in the border town had been significant.

They explained that some residents were unable to have their meals because of the late notice of the curfew, while food vendors who prepare meals for travellers, particularly drivers of heavy-duty goods vehicles arriving late at night, suffered considerable losses as they could not make sales. Some of the prepared food consequently went bad.

The chiefs appealed to the MP to help secure an early lifting of the restriction to enable residents and businesses to resume their normal activities.

Responding to the appeal, Prof. Beyuo said he could only pursue the request if the community leaders assured him and members of the Upper West Regional Security Council (REGSEC) that the incidents which led to the imposition of

He indicated that the community leaders were committed to maintaining peace and preventing a repeat of the disturbances that necessitated the imposition of the curfew.

Prof. Beyuo used the opportunity to caution the chiefs against acts of destruction and threats to public infrastructure, particularly attempts to destroy public property or threaten to set security installations ablaze.

He acknowledged that people could become angry under difficult circumstances but stressed that such emotions should never translate into violence, destruction of public property or threats against security institutions.

The MP further explained that the authority to lift the curfew rests solely with the Interior Minister. He, however, assured the chiefs that he would engage the Minister to discuss the possibility of lifting the curfew in Hamile.

He urged the traditional authorities and residents to sustain their commitment to peace and work to geth the security agencies to restore normalcy in the community.
