
Mr Rockson Afriyie, the HoD for the ICT Department of Dr Hillia limann Technical University paid a working visit to Noni Hub, Yison Tech Hub and Fidelity Bank in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region.
His first stopover was Noni Hub where he congratulated them for winning MTN momo Ayoba accelerator price competition for 2022.
He elaborated the areas where the organization can collaborate with the University and the Department.
Mr Sumaila Chakurah, the CEO of Noni Hub expressed his organization readiness to mentor and give skills development to students who need their support. According to him, they are building a community of makers, where graduates after training will not necessarily depend on the government for employment, but will be able to convert their project works to prototype and finally commercialise their ideas.
He indicated that their doors are widely open to collaborate with the University, especially students from the ICT and Engineering departments.
According to him, they have the intention to accept graduates after completion to have their National service at Noni Hub or recommend them to other tech organisations that needs their services.
They took the HoD to inspect labs and their Makers Space where projects are prototyped for further development. Mr Mustpha the engineer at the workshop explained operations at the makes Space.
The next stop was Yison tech, where the HoD met the CEO, Issahaque Serikpera Naa and a staff member to discuss an MoU summited by the Department. The discussions centred on the possible benefits that can be derived from the MoU in bridging the gap between academia and industry. The team was taken around their premises to see at first hand various offices and departments at Yison Tech Hub. The CEO, who also doubles as a resource person for the Association of Technical University Information Technology Students (ATUITS), promised to work with his team to finalize the MoU and expressed his gratitude for the visit.
Mr Rockson Afriyie then proceeded to Fidelity Bank where he had a fruitful discussions with the Branch Manager, Mr Alhassan Bassa. They discussed how Fidelity Bank can assist the Department with teachning and learning equipment such as a laptop and a projector. They also discussed the modalities to customize the Department ID cards issued to students as Fidelity Visa Cards for students. They also deliberated on how to secure laptops for students under a project theme “One student, One laptop”
Mr Alhassan, Branch manager of Fidelity Bank Wa Branch, received the message with passion and pledged to push the information to The top hierarchy, especially, those requests that are beyond his jurisdiction for further consideration and revert to the HoD.
He thanked the HoD for making time out of his tight schedules to visit them and promised to do his outmost best to push the message to the right quarters.
Mr Rockson Afriyie, the HOD of ICT Department since taken office has took it upon himself as a tradition to visit various industry players in the Information Technology space to discuss and seek how the Department can collaborate with industry to help equip and make students industry ready after graduation. Members from the Department who were with the HoD are Mr. Dakurah Mohammed Alhassan, a member of the Department Media and Mr. Stephen Arthur.
