Stakeholders have called for commitment from teachers and the enhancement of supervision for both teachers and the office is what is needed to change the worsening educational results in Sissala East, a director of supervision at the Ghana education service office says “if teachers are not committed not even a helicopter can change the situation”.
An educational forum meant to stop the abysmal performance in the BECE is on going at the Sissala East district assembly at the instance of the Sissala East assembly.
Opening the session for a well attended forum at hall of the Sissala East assembly, the DCE Hon.Karim Nanyua said ” the forum is organised to create a platform for the various stakeholders in education to dispassionately discuss problems which hinder the development of education at the basic and 2nd cycle levels in the Sissala east”.
He bemoaned a situation where “a chunk of the District assembly’s is devoted to the provision of social infrastructure with educational facilities taking half of the allocation,yet qualitative outcomes leave much to be desired”
As gloomy picture exist in the Sissala East inspite of increase in form and scope of governments initiative ,evidence on the ground suggest not much has been achieved in terms of quality in the BECE and the West Africa School Certificate Examination
results.
He noted in 2013,out of 752 candidates who wrote,269 passed representing 35.90%.In 2014 872 sat for the exams,265 candidate made it representing 30.49%.In 2015,972 wrote the exams,2 19 made it accounting for 22.63%.In 2016 out of 1,077 average performance stood at 29% as those who fell in the category of aggregate 6-30 was 19% and category 6-36 was also 39%.The DCE in his closing remarks said
“Education is a concern for all of us,after the meeting,I will call DEOC meeting to implement the actions plans for 2018 to 2019”.
If in 2000 pupils could get aggregate 6 and single digits why can’t we do it now?he questioned .”The bad results we get from BECE today results in bad West African results at the SHS level we should be mindful of that.The forum waa attended by former DCEs, GES officials,headmasters and principals of basic and tertiary institutions,religious leaders and pupils.
