U/W: Some Achievements of the Late Rawlings in Upper West

Former President Rawlings after his death was laid in state at the Accra International Conference center for the public to pay their last respect to the Statesman before his burial on 27th January 2021.

The Former President Died in November 2020, few weeks after he lost his mother.

There are numerous achievements he has in Upper West Region that has made his name a household name in the Region.

1. He Made Upper West a Region, the Former President, in 1983 was able to split Upper West From Upper Region, Making it Upper West and Upper East, two different Regions.

This resulted in him being praised and hailed by several of the residents who admitted he has made things easier. The Upper Regional Capital was Bolgatanga but due to the split, Wa was made the capital of the Upper West Region.

2. He Brought University For Development Studies to the North in Order to bridge the Education gap between the North and the South. Former President Rawlings, as part of his desire to expand university education in the country particularly, the North, freely donated US$ 50,000 award from the Hunger Project he won in 1993 to help start the University of Development Studies during his tenure as President.

The Governing Council of the University in 2013 conferred on Mr. Rawlings an honorary doctorate degree.

UDS had campuses in Upper West, Upper East and Northern Region.

President Akufo-Addo was to name the University after him but he declined.

3. The Former President Extended Electricity to the Northern Belt which now bares the name Volta River Authority now NEDCo.
