The Wa Technical Institute (WA TECH) in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region has been closed for a week after a violent disturbance involving students on Wednesday, November 19, 2025.
The campus of the institution was thrown into disorder when some learners reportedly went on a destructive rampage, vandalizing school facilities and private property. Among the items damaged were vehicles, a container shop, and parts of the school’s administration block.
Although the exact trigger of the unrest has not yet been officially confirmed, early indications point to a confrontation between some students and community members, allegedly sparked by a disagreement over a mobile phone.
The Ministry of Education on Saturday, November 22, 2025, condemned the conduct of the students. The Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, who visited the school for a closed-door meeting with management and to inspect the damage, revealed that a committee has been constituted to investigate the incident. The committee has been given seven days to submit its findings and propose punitive actions.
According to Dr. Apaak, the government will not condone acts of lawlessness in educational institutions and expects firm disciplinary steps to be taken against all culprits.
On Sunday, November 23, 2025, the Acting Regional Director of Ghana TVET and Principal of WA TECH, Saaka Adams, officially announced the temporary shutdown of the institute. He described the measure as necessary to help restore calm while authorities work to address the situation.
Police officers have since been stationed at the school, though no arrests have been made so far as investigations continue.
